Peppa Pig Fondant Cake.
My daughter loves peppa much and so I have decided to make
her birthday with Peppa theme. Since it’s a covid pandemic period, I don’t want
to risk in ordering the cake from our usual cake wala, Bangalore.
So I thought why can’t I bake myself. A month back I baked a
Cream cake for my anniversary and cake was better when compared to cream. I have a friend Maria who bakes cakes well and
yummy. I had a talk with her and later I came to know about preparing cream is
Frosting and sugar mix used for decoration is Fondant. Then had a look into
various you tube videos and baking course in Udemy. With little variations and
many trials, now I had a confident that I can bake myself.
I bought an Electric beater from amazon, which is very
essential for frosting. Because initially I used to beat manually and I cudn’t
get the good result for cream. So I feel its needed for baking. And I have
ordered few items from Amazon for baking and decorating.
To prepare this Fondant cake, we need to go through three steps:
- Bake a Cake
- Prepare a Cream for Frosting
- Make a Fondant with different color and shapes for decorating.
Bake a Cake
Will look into the first step to bake a cake. It’s a basic
spongy, fluffy cake in strawberry flavor.
Ingredients:
Egg – 3
Maida – 12 tablespoons
Icing Sugar (Powdered Sugar) – 12 tablespoons
Milk – 4 tablespoons
Oil – 4 tablespoons
Strawberry Essence – 2 teaspoons
Salt – ½ teaspoon.
The above were the
exact measurements which I used and it came out extremely soft.
Since I don’t have any photos to attach with, will try to
elaborate everything in my writing. Please be patience to read through.
- First, separate white and yolk from eggs. Keep white portions in a big bowl and yolks in a separate small bowl.
- With beater, beat the egg white with slow speed then increase to medium and then to high for 2 to 3 minutes.
- The quantity will get increased and now you can sieve add icing sugar to the egg white little by little. You can powder the sugar in home also with a mixer jar. For example, add 3 tablespoons of icing sugar to the egg white and beat it in low speed for few seconds and then add another 3 tablespoons of icing sugar and beat it in low speed and continue the same for entire quantity of icing sugar. Once u added all the icing sugars, increase the speed to high and beat well for 1 or 2 minutes and leave it aside.
- Now mix that egg yolks with spoon which we have kept in a separate bowl. Add essence and salt to it and give a mix with spoon.
- Then add this egg yolk mix with the egg white and icing sugar mix and beat altogether in a high speed.
- Sieve the maida and add it to this mixture little by little as how we add icing sugar earlier. But from this stage don’t use beater, rather use big flat spoon to mix. Mix it gently until the maida gets dissolved.
- Add milk and oil at this stage and give a gentle mix.
- Grease the pan with butter or oil and pour this mixture into the pan and make sure it occupies only half or ¾ of the pan and tap it for two or three times.
- Use tooth pick to mix this mixture. Start from the middle of a pan in a clock wise direction mix it in a way that you are drawing a spiral and ends at the outer layer which touches the pan.
- Preheat the oven/OTG at 200 degree Celsius for 10 minutes. If you are using a kadai to bake, either use salt or sand to spread a layer and place a stand on it. Cover the pan now and preheat for 10 minutes in a high flame.
- Place the pan in a preheated oven and bake it at 175 degree Celsius for 30 minutes. In case of kadai, place the pan and cover it tightly. In a low flame bake it for 50 to 55 minutes.
- Once the setting time gets over, insert a tooth pick at the center to check. If the toothpick is non-sticky, then your cake is baked. In case your cake is sticky, again bake it for few more minutes.
- Keep the pan out and allow it to cool for few minutes and take the cake out from the pan. Let it cool completely.
·
Your soft, fluffy and spongy cake is baked now.
Hurray !! we have completed our
first step successfully.
Preparing a Cream
I have prepared a strawberry cream to fill and to cover the
cake(frosting).
Ingredients
Butter – 100 gm
Icing Sugar – 200 gm
Cream- 2 tablespoons
Strawberry Essence – 2 teaspoons
Pink liquid food color – a drop.
I have used salted butter. In case if you are using unsalted
butter, then you can add a salt later. I have used fresh cream, in case of
non-availability milk can also be used (but cream gives you better result than
milk).
Will get into the preparation of cream.
- Place the butter (non-melted, room temperature) in a big bowl and with the beater beat well from low speed to medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Now add icing sugar to the butter little by little and mix it well with the beater. (Follow the same way as how we add icing sugar in egg white for cake).
- Once u have added all the icing sugar, increase the speed to high and beat it for 2 minutes.
- Add strawberry essence and food color to the butter mixture and continue beating in the same speed.
- Add cream/ milk at this stage depends on your consistency. If you take the beater blade out the cream should not be very thick. If its thick add few more cream or milk. (The above measurements were exact for me).
Wow !! we have crossed our second
step and now our yummy elegant strawberry cream is ready!!
Preparing with Fondant
All color fondants are available in the market. I preferred
white fondant so that we can add color gels to it for various colors and as per
our quantity which is cost efficient.
Ingredients
To make a peppa pig decoration, I have used the following
items.
·
White Fondant – 400 grams
·
Food color gel – few
·
Dry icing sugar – 50 grams
·
Fondant cutters for alphabets and number
·
Mould for butterfly and flowers.
- Fondant will be very hard initially and if you keep on kneading you can get the flexible one. Be careful because it get moist soon. If you apply icing sugar on rolling pad and in your hands, you can avoid that stickiness.
- In my cake I have used blue color for sky and green color for ground. Since I don’t have green color, I mixed yellow and blue to get green. Gel color will give you dark if you use more. So use a tooth pick to take a color and add it to the white fondant.
- Knead it well so that you will get your color evenly spread to the fondant.
- I have a prepared a sky-blue fondant. Take the white fondant as per your need as how much you want to cover your cake approximately. Add blue color and knead well with dry sugar powder until you get the color evenly. Wrap the fondant in a plastic sheet to avoid moisture.
- I have added yellow and blue color to white fondant and kneaded well to get light green color(If you have green color, you can add directly) and wrap it.
- For sun, I have made a yellow fondant.
- For peppa pig face, to get a light pink color I have added very little amount of red and for body I have used the same red color.
- Prepare this fondant at least half an hour before so that the colors can set in the fondant evenly.
- Now we have crossed all the three steps and now stepping into climax of the cake which is decoration.
Decorating a Cake
- Take the cake which was completely cooled and slice it horizontally at the center. If your pan is in circle shape, once you slice it, you will be getting two circle shaped cake slices. Hope I made you clear!
- Make a sugar syrup (Take 2 tablespoons of sugar with 100 ml of water and boil it until sugar melts and allow it to cool).
- Pour 4 to 6 spoons of sugar syrup on the top of the base slice of the cake and make sure it spreads out evenly (since the cake absorbs it fast, we can make sure it covers all the area).
- Take a cream and apply it evenly to that syrup sliced cake and place the other slice of cake on top of it pour syrup to it as we did before and apply cream on top and sides and make it even.
- Place the cream applied cake in the fridge for 10 minutes.
- Now take the cake out and apply the cream thick (second coat) all over the cake and make it even and again place it in a fridge for 10 more minutes.
- Now comes the fondant.
- Apply sugar powder on a roller base and spread out the blue color fondant in a rectangular shape with the roller (as the same way how we make chapatis).Make sure the fondant is dry.
- Dip a knife or flat spoon in a hot water and apply it over the cake, where you want to cover with fondant.
- I have dipped knife in hot water and spread it on the top half of the cake and apply the blue fondant over it.
- Press it with your hand gently to make it even on top of the cake and the sides so that it sets well and air bubbles will be removed.
- Similarly, do it for green fondant and apply it on the bottom half of the cake.
- Make a sun with yellow fondant and place it with hot water.
- I have drawn peppa in a paper and placed on top of the pink fondant and cut it out only the face portion.
- And cut the body portion on the red fondant in the same way. For shoes I have used brown color.
- Paste it with the help of hot water.
- If you have cutters you can use it to make alphabets, number, flower, leaf and butterfly or you can shape it yourselves and paste it.
Kudos!!! The yummy
strawberry peppa pig fondant cake is ready to party.
[Hint: It took
totally 5+ hours for me to make it. So plan yours accordingly π]
